Are you eyeing a career in the robust world of marketing?  The marketing industry now operates in a spectacular realm of promotions and advertising that, with the advent of the Internet, has become more diverse and challenging.  Not to mention that there are thousands of similar products competing a share in the market.  Are you up to the challenging of a marketing job?

What is a marketing job like?  What degree should you hold to land into a marketing job?  By definition, marketing simply means a strategy to coax consumers into buying your product or using your service.  Marketing is a very broad discipline but it generally involves public relations, sales, packaging, and distribution. 

With that said, a marketing job then involves marketing communication and visual advertising, both of which can be in the form of print, television, radio, and the Internet.  However, stiff competition has led companies to formulate other strategies with product sampling as one.

Essentially, marketing is all about finding the right people to persuade just as business is all about making money.  You can’t be selling candy bars to the old folks.   Tey just will not buy it.  There is a thin demarcation line between advertising and marketing, although the former is a known marketing strategy.

In a marketing job, your expertise and industry knowledge are your greatest tools to survive the strong competition in marketing jobs and sales.  Hence, when applying for a marketing job, make sure your resume is creatively designed so that it “sells” yourself to prospective employers.  It is this early that companies take a first impression of your marketing skills by simply selling yourself.

Citing accomplishments is very important as well as a description of your responsibilities on certain projects.  Take care when citing figures, and when you do, show only quantifiable sales results that will be relevant to people outside the company you work in.

Show Persistence
Persistence is a vital characteristic each marketing personnel should have because, after all, the biggest challenge in trying to sell something is being able to close a deal where rejection is inevitable.  If there was a sales problem with your previous or present company that you’re able to solve, you can cite that particular accomplishment.  The important thing to detail is that you never gave up easily.

There is nothing too impossible with persistence.  If you’re having difficulty getting an interview, ask to be referred to by a colleague who already works in the prospective company.

Cite Real-life Experience
Although many employers would like to be hiring experienced applicants, you don’t have to place yourself at the end of the line.  Simply outline any life accomplishment that shows your “can-do” spirit to show companies you have what it takes to perform the responsibilities of a marketing job.  There are many entry-level marketing jobs that don’t require much experience as long as you as are persuasive enough beginning in your resume and through the interview process.

The competition in the marketing industry not only stems from companies struggling to win a major share of the market, but also it’s a stiff competition among salespeople who keep the industry as vibrant as it can be.  Don’t let rejection get in the way between your dream job and you.
